Come join us at our first meeting of 2020 and hear from Rita and Leslie Lurie co-authors of Bending Toward the Sun, a mother and daughter memoir.
In a story that evokes Anne Frank, Rita Lurie, along with 14 family members, hid from the Nazis for 2 years in a cramped, dark attic, kept alive by the courage and kindness of gentile friends. She watched helplessly as her younger brother, then mother, died before her eyes.
Leslie, Rita’s daughter, tells how her mother’s trauma has shaped her life and that of her own daughter. Leslie Gilbert-Lurie is a writer, lawyer, former executive, and a teacher of Holocaust studies. She has been a recipient of the American Jewish Congress’ Tzedek Award for Outstanding Commitment to Civil Rights, Civil Liberties, and Justice and the Alliance for Children’s Rights Child Advocate of the Year Award.
